AKC Rally is a highly motivational obedience class, which both you and your dog will enjoy tremendously! Hand and/or voice commands and body language ARE encouraged, and are a major part of the teamwork.

The basic objective of Rally is to provide an activity that does not require extensive precision for success. As described in the AKC Rally Regulations, Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the rally judge. The judge tells the handler to begin, and the dog and handler proceed at their own pace through a course of designated stations (10 – 20, depending on the level). Each of these stations has a sign with a diagram and text describing what is to be performed. It’s very important that all students read the AKC Rally Regulations and the AKC Description and Performance of the Exercises found at the AKC Website.

A little about myself...
I have been competing and titling my dogs in Obedience since 1983, Tracking since 1994 and Rally since 2003. I’ve trained and handled three of my dogs to a UD title, trained and handled two of my dogs to be Champion Trackers, trained and handled one senior to an RN and one to an RAE title. My dogs have earned CGC and Therapy Dog titles. Two have earned a TDIA (over 50 visits). I had a Rescue dog for 3 years who lived to be 16 ½ years old. She earned her Canine Good Citizen at age 15! My dogs have all been my home companions!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching and working with many aspects of AKC Rally since January 2003. Since then, I've taught weekly rally classes for 3 different dog training clubs and have many students who have received many Rally titles, including many placements. I've also been teaching Obedience classes since 2003 and assisted Rosalie Alvarez for many years prior.

I have also helped many mixed breeds towards achieving Mixed Breed titles in Rally, Obedience and Tracking.

In each Excellent course, there are 6 elements that can be used – they are the 5 Excellent signs plus 2 jumps. Of these 6 elements, I have used 4 of them in each of the Excellent courses.
Also, in each Excellent course, I have used 4 or 5 Advanced signs.
Excellent courses have 6-10 sits in each course.

In each Advanced course, there are 14 Advanced signs that can be used.
Of these 14 signs, I have used 5 or 6 of them in each Advanced course.
Advanced courses have 6-10 sits in each course.

In each Novice course, there are 29 Novice signs that can be used. I have used anywhere from 10-15 signs in these courses.

NOTE: I recommend circling signs or numbers on the “working course map” to help with easy course changes each class setup. Make sure to remove any signs not being used from previous class.
Honor: This station is placed to enable working dog not to interfere with Honor dog. Handler of working team will be between honor dog and working dog in tighter areas.
Recommended entrance and exit in diagrams for Offset Figure 8 on courses.
Cones are strategically placed to not lure dog towards jumps. Pay attention to any cone placements near jumps in diagram.
Courses are designed to accommodate 5’ wide jumps on courses.
Some changes from Excellent class to Advanced class will require moving jump 1 to 2 feet.
Advanced and Excellent courses are designed with subtle changes to challenge RAE exhibitors.
